Compatibility

This kit is designed to suit RHD pre-airbag models only. Airbag-optioned 80 Series please contact us for more information. We are currently interested in developing a RHD airbag 80 series kit and are looking for a testing helper.

LHD 80 Series are in the final stages of development.

Installation

Comprehensive installation manual included.

Tools required: P1/P2 screwdriver. Trim removal tool (optional but helpful).

You will need to manually hook up 1-4 wires depending on your harness type. Type 1 harness only required 1 wire to be hooked up (the optional  illumination), everything else is plug and play. Type 2 harness requires 4 wires to be hooked up in total to the rear of the headunit.

Trail Teq recommends splicing/connecting using non insulated butt connectors, with heat shrink, for the best connection. Alternatively you could solder, or use wire taps.

Wiring Harness Type

Please carefully select which style of steering wheel you intend to use, so that we can supply the correct components (each type of wheel requires slightly different wiring).

Other steering wheel buttons associated with lane assist. or original in-car system menus (the digital dash menus) are not able to be reassigned to the headunit.

This kit is plug-and-play for most modern (2017 onwards) Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood and JVC  head units with built in steering wheel learning, this is commonly advertised as 'direct OEM Japanese car compatibility'. This kit is also plug-and-play with most Android based units such as Joying, Atoto, Polaris, etc.

For head units with a built in 3.5mm jack, select our TYPE 1 Harness. Examples of this are shown in the picture diagrams. Our Type 1 Harness plugs straight in. On the back of the headunit this is usually called REMOTE or W/R.

For head units without the 3.5mm jack, and all Android-based headunits, you may have three wires either unterminated, usually referred to as Input 1, Input 2, and GND. For these head units, select our TYPE 2 Harness. You will need to solder or crimp connection our harness to those three wires as per our installation manual.

For all Alpine head units, or older Pioneer/Sony/Kenwood/JVC capable of digital steering wheel input (but not resistance based), a separate steering wheel control interface (such as an Aerpro CHTO3C, PAC or Axxess) is required, as well as some additional wiring and installation procedures.

Shipment

Each kit is custom made by hand by Trail Teq in Australia. Please allow up to 5 days production time prior to postage.

Important Info

Minor trimming to the lower half of the steering column plastic shroud is required to fit this kit. The trimmed area is not visible with the steering wheel fitted.

300 Series Steering Wheels - after purchase, we will email you asking for photographs of your steering wheel control plug to confirm wiring type. This is required as there are 3 variations of the control wiring on the market at the moment and it differs between wheel supplier.

Cruise Control

There is the option to integrate the seperate two-wire type Toyota cruise control stalk into the wiring loom for those using FTE conversions and aftermarket cruise control (e.g. Autostrada kits for the FTE).

OEM 80 series cruise control is not compatible with modern cruise control switches or buttons found on these wheels. The only way to make them work is to open up the modern switches, and change the resistors on the boards, as well as add wiring. The reason for this is that the resistors in the modern switches don't match those on the 80 Series System, as well as the 80 Series System using multiple wires for the inputs (3 or 5 depending on year model), whereas modern switches only use 2 wires.  It's doable, but not something that can be provided plug-and-play by Trail Teq.

Disclaimer
